Our History

Humble Beginnings…

New Morning Natural Foods opened May 8, 1976, on lower Main Street in Biddeford. Paul and I always say that we were naive enough (We were 21 and 22, and pregnant for our first child, Jeremiah) to believe that it would be successful. The beginning was certainly a humble one, fueled by our own beliefs in whole organic foods being the best choice for one’s health. We had a message and we wanted to share it! What better way than to open a store where like minded people could get the products and education they desired. Those days were not easy ones. Whole grains, beans and herbs were not in high demand! Most people had not heard of brown rice, tofu, miso, seaweeds, and using herbs for healing. Even the concept of eating for health was not an accepted lifestyle. We had no idea it would ever be; we just felt it was our mission to share it.

There has been much change over the years as our business grew. In the small store we moved the wall back several times, occupying every inch of space before we moved to our present Biddeford Main Street location in 1990. Then in 1995, we had a providential opportunity to open our second store on route one in Kennebunk.

Our goal still reflects our passion for empowering you to have better health through good nutrition. We aim to serve you by giving you the best information we have, locating products that you want, ordering bulk foods at savings, supporting local producers of natural products, and even carrying out your bags-all with a smile! We love what we do!

Today, New Morning is a family affair. Our son, Jeremiah, manages the Kennebunk store.  On Saturdays, Jenice, (Jeremiah’s wife) works. She also works with me in our organic garden, which supplies some of the produce we sell. Our daughter, Ariel, has now graduated from college with a B.S. in Biology, and is currently working full time as she works toward her degree as a nutrition consultant from Bauman College. Our granddaughter, Abbie, works during the summer. Even our son, Ryan, has a hand in it for any type of carpentry skills that are needed. We are ever grateful for this wonderful opportunity to work where our passion lies.

Today New Morning Natural Foods has two locations in Biddeford and Kennebunk.
